Absolute Loyalty

Pledges of absolute loyalty give me the heebie-jeebies.

For both the person giving said oath and the one receiving it.

As a recipient - don't put that shit on me!

By which I mean - if you're a full grown adult with a working brain,I expect you to be able to make your own decisions. A pledge of absolute loyalty puts the burden of decision making on me, and I don't want it.

And for the person giving such an oath?

What an abdication of responsibility. You should only give such an oath to someone whose decision making you absolutely trust, and even if they really are trustworthy at that time - people change. Circumstances change.

Which means you always have to keep an eye out, see if the person you give your loyalty to is using that honor well.

Which means you always retain the option of changing your mind, as it should be.

If you can't persuade people to support your cause willingly and honestly (and without pledges of absolute loyalty, or demanding followers kiss the ring, etc) then I don't think you deserve absolute loyalty.

I suppose it creates a bit of a paradox - someone worthy of absolute loyalty would never ask for it, and someone asking for it obviously isn't worthy of it.
