A completely fictional story with a US vet isekaied to another world summed up what I was taught pretty on how to win wars well - "competence, teamwork, and the absolute refusal to accept that any soldier was expendable."
Maybe add in logistics and supply chains, but I think that falls under 'competence'.
And then I look at the current leadership and I could just cry.
Incompetence, they're destroying teamwork, and they sure seem to think soldiers are expendable.
