“We are in danger of producing an educated proletariat.
That’s dynamite! We have to be selective on who we allow to go through
higher education.”
This naturally targets the notion that the rich and powerful form a united front determined to hold on to power at all costs, and willing to make average citizens suffer in order to maintain control.
I don't know if that's true or not. I get why people think it's happening... Too many decisions have been made that are outright hurtful, and it seems impossible to believe that it's done out of ignorance.
Anyways, I brought it up mostly because if it were true it's:
a) an example of how fear destroys good judgment. Roger Freeman, in the quote above, is afraid of an 'educated proletariat'. Why? What evidence does he have that it's even a problem? And if it were, is actively making it harder to get an education if you're not already wealthy really the answer? This particular quote just reeks of BS.
b) anyone who agreed with him and deliberately tried making it harder for poor people to go to college has demonstrated that they don't deserve to be in any position of power or influence.
Apparently they really are so concerned with maintaining their status that they really will hurt the rest of society.
Now... How many of the rich and powerful actually think that way?
